Large areas of the country are under the control of drug cartels and paramilitary groups. Most Christian persecution comes from the alliances that exist between non-Christian indigenous population and paramilitaries, who view Christians who openly oppose their activities as a threat. At least five Christians were martyred in 2011, but it is estimated that the death toll is probably much higher. In February, a pastor and two of his relatives were killed by rebel groups in retaliation for the growth in the number of believers.
Pray:
- For protection for pastors seeking to share the gospel in their communities.
- For Open Doors’ children’s center, which provides safety and an education for children of Christians targeted by rebel groups.
- Remember the families of those murdered and those who have been forced to relocate for their own safety.
