The country’s first free and fair elections in October 2011 gave Kyrgyzstan the opportunity to grant minorities a legal standing. However, Christians face ongoing discrimination from society in general and the government’s disregard for believers’ freedom continues. The strict laws on religion introduced in 2009 are still in force, making it almost impossible for churches to register. Christians are monitored both by the state, Islamic clergy and neighborhood committees. Conversion to Christianity is prohibited. Believers experience physical abuse and attacks on their meeting places and homes.
Pray:
- Christian literature and materials are censored. Pray for those involved in distributing Bibles and training resources.
- Christian education for children is limited. Pray for opportunities for children to hear the gospel through summer camps and outreach events.
- Praise God that the elections in 2011 were free and fair. Pray for a corresponding change of attitude both among politicians and wider society towards Christianity.
